In good condition and with necessary accessories, the SPEX CertiPrep 6850 Freezer/Mill cools samples using liquid nitrogen and pulverizes them with a magnetically driven (coil) steel impactor. It weighs approximately 102 lbs.; however, it is a bench-top model and can be set up conveniently.

The control panel has indicator LEDs and a keypad that allows an operator to program the number of cycles, grinding time per cycle (10 minutes max; 2-minute typical grinding time), cooling time per cycle (typically 1 or 2 minutes), pre-cooling time (90 minutes max), and impact frequency (15 per second max), or rate.

This unit typically consumes 15-20 liters of liquid nitrogen (not included) for initial cool-down/tub-filling period and 4-6 liters for each subsequent hour of operation. The coil holds one large-capacity 6801 Vial or four small-capacity 6751 Vials.

Safety precautions are built into this cryogenic impact mill. Because of its lid interlock feature, the 6850 mill does not operate when the lid is open. There is also a sensor that ceases the operation of the unit when the liquid nitrogen level is low or empty. The unit is also equipped with a circuit breaker.
