Summa canister is an air sampling industry term for a stainless steel "summa" polished or electropolished passivated vessel used to collect a whole air sample. The sample is then analyzed using gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry (MS) following a methodology detailed by the US EPA Compendium Method TO-14 and TO-15. The electropolishing or summa polishing process passivates the (304-grade) stainless steel by creating a chromium oxide-rich surface layer on the interior of the canister.
Contrary to popular opinion, summa canisters or summa polishing is not a registered trade name, and summa polishing was just one company's name for its electropolishing processes.
